HACKENSACK, a city in Birch Lake Township, section 19, was named for an earlier post office there established in 1888, which derived its name from the town of Hackensack in New Jersey, on the Hackensack River, given by James Curo, who was the first postmaster, ranchman, and merchant there. It was incorporated as a village on June 5, 1903, and separated from the township on May 18, 1911; it had a station of the Minnesota and International Railway; it was also the home of Lucette Diana Kensack, Paul Bunyan's girlfriend.
