Howard Lake Minnesota Community Guide

Howard Lake is a city in Wright County, Minnesota. U.S. Route 12 serves as a main route in the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.05 square miles (5.31 km2); 1.77 square miles (4.58 km2) is land and 0.28 square miles (0.73 km2) is water. The elevation is 1,014 ft (309 m) above sea level.

HOWARD LAKE, a city in sections 3 and 4 of Victor, platted in the spring of 1869, incorporated in 1879, "takes its name from the beautiful sheet of water, on the south of which it is located, and which, tradition informs us, was named by the first surveyors who visited this region, in honor of John Howard, the English philanthropist" (History of the Upper Mississippi Valley, p. 575). He was born probably at Hackney, London, September 2, 1726; died, at Kherson, Russia, January 20, 1790; was celebrated for his exertions in behalf of prison reform. The first settler, Morgan V. Cochran, came in 1855 to section 3 and laid out a townsite he named Lynden, selling the land in 1863 to Charles Goodsell, who farmed the land until 1869, when the Great Northern Railway came. Goodsell platted the site, and buildings were soon erected, including John F. Pearson's general store, where the post office, transferred from Middlesville, began in 1870 as Howard, changing to Howard Lake in 1892.

Wright County Fair 4th weekend in July Located at the fairgrounds on Wright County Road 6 (north of Highway 12) in Howard Lake, the Wright County Fair is a summer tradition that draws a big crowd. In 2016, the fair was reported to have set a record, with about 68,500 in attendance. The overall attendance for 2017 was also high, at 67,392. Each year, there’s an abundance of things to see and do all five days – lumberjack competitions, bull riding, mud-truck runs, BMX bicycle shows, sheep riding, ukulele performances, pie-eating contests, and more. The petting zoo houses animals of all kinds, from bunnies and deer to kangaroos and ponies. 4-H barns showcase swine, poultry, cows, goats, and many other animals. Horse competitions take place daily. In the grandstand, attendees can find tractor pulls and demolition derbies. Free entertainment is available at the fair, including live music, blacksmith demonstrations, and a talent show. The midway, which has rides, paintball, and games, offers deals with an armband purchase multiple days of the fair. There is also a child’s bicycle drawing each of the four days.
